There is a lot of buzz going around that the factory ported heads that came on the JDM Civic EP3 and Integra DC5 Euro-R make less horsepower than they should.topreal honda cylinder head The truth is that the factory head actually flows very well and can easily make 270bhp. The problem is that when a person starts tuning these engines to work with a ported head they are taking it too far and running outside the timing window. This can damage the engine.
A big reason for this is that a ported head has to be matched to the proper set of cams and the correct intake manifold to make optimum power. Putting a huge cam on a factory head that flows low cfm#'s is like putting a big turbo on an engine that doesn’t have the fuel/ignition system to run it. You’ll end up damaging the engine and not making the power that you paid a lot of money to make.
The solution is to find a machine shop that offers a head service and uses digital CNC machining processes to maintain, modify and save the head. There are a few good options in the country that can do this for a reasonable cost. These shops also can offer an excellent head gasket sealing surface and a head that is ready to accept a high pressure valve train with no issues.
