How to Replace a Trim and Tilt Motor
Trim and Tilt motors are used to raise and lower your engine after launching it or tilting it all the way up when pulling out of the water.tilt trim motor mercury 65hp 75hp 90hp 115hp 150hp They are controlled with buttons on your boat’s engine control handle or directly on the trim-and-tilt switch if you have one. If your engine won’t move up or down with these controls it is likely the power trim motor needs to be replaced.
First check if the unit has hydraulic fluid. If it is empty or low you can open the manual relief valve on the bottom of the trim unit and fill it. Make sure the valve is tight and that the up and down button work when this is done. If it still doesn’t work the next step is to raise the motor as high as it will go with the throttle in neutral. If you can’t lift the motor by hand find the manual release screw and remove it loosen it 3-4 turns and try to raise the engine again.
This will bleed air out of the system and should fix your problem. You will need to do this every time you use the trim/tilt button. If this doesn’t solve your problem there may be a blockage in the system or you may need to replace the whole trim/tilt unit.
To remove the unit you will need to disconnect the battery, then take off the cover on the motor and remove the trim-and-tilt actuator. Once you have removed the actuator it should come out with a couple of screws that hold the unit to the boat. If there is heavy corrosion on the unit it may be necessary to pull the engine and get to the back screws that hold the trim unit in place, this can be a very difficult job and you will need a hoist.
