Hydraulic Steering Cylinder Outboard Marine For Yamaha Mercury

If your boat has a hydraulic steering system it will use power steering fluid to move the helm wheel to steer.hydraulic steering cylinder outboard marine for yamaha mercury A power steering pump keeps the fluid circulating. It is important to keep the fluid level up because if it gets low it will cause your system to fail.

The easiest way to check the fluid level is by removing the black reservoir cap and looking through it. The fluid should be about an inch below the fill hole. If it is below that the system needs to be serviced or a leak is present.

You can also check the fluid by plugging the helm pump outlets and then filling the pump. This will let you know if the cylinder is leaking or not. Next you will need to remove the hydraulic lines from the cylinder and put plugs in their place. When the cylinder is disconnected it's a good time to clean it up, as there is usually rust build up around the end glands. This will also help with the longevity of your cylinder.

If you have a dual cable steering system, there is a lot of "play" in the cables. This is fine when it's new but will increase as the cable wears. This is why the dual cable systems are designed, to eliminate the steering flutter that occurs on high performance boats at speeds over 50mph.

Whether you have a single or double cable system there are several things you can do to maintain it. One thing is to replace the lubricating oil every 100 hours. The other is to add a rust inhibitor to the fluid. You can also change the lubrication to a full synthetic power steering fluid, which will make it last longer.

When you are changing the lubrication be sure to clean the piston rod and end glands with a rag. This will prevent any grease or dirt from being pushed into the cylinder during the lubrication process and it will reduce the amount of friction between the ram and the helm head.

Another thing to do is to check the cylinder for any obvious nicks in the piston shaft, (ram). If you see any small nicks then I would recommend replacing the cylinder. Also, be sure to use the right type of power steering fluid, such as Quicksilver power steering fluid.

The Seastar cylinder comes in balanced or unbalanced and fits almost any 2 or 4 stroke Outboard or Sterndrive on the market. It is easy to install and has a heavy duty stainless steel cylinder rod and seals. The cylinder is built for durability and long life.
