The tilt and trim system on a boat allows the operator to raise or lower the engine and adjust its angle in relation to the transom, adjusting performance and handling under different conditions. The tilt/trim motor is responsible for driving the hydraulic or electric mechanism that controls these movements, and a defective one can lead to difficulty raising or lowering the engine and improper tilt and trim angles.
To service the tilt/trim motor, first, make sure it is in the up position (either by using a tilt lock on your motor or a block to keep it in the up position) and remove the fill plug. Add the proper fluid, and cycle the motor several times to purge the air from the system.
If you're having trouble raising or lowering your engine, it's likely the pressure release valve on the trim cylinder is wearing out and needs to be resealed. It's easily done, and there are a few youtube videos showing how.
