Setting the Operating Angle of a Manual Tilt Trim Motor for Mercury Mariner Outboard Engines

If you have a manual tilt outboard, the operating angle is critical for performance, stability and steering effort.tilt trim motor for mercury mariner outboard engine 4t 65hp Fortunately, setting the operating angle is easy with the following steps.

First, remove the spring-loaded trim pin in the transom bracket*. If the outboard is in neutral, this should be easily done by pressing either the up or down button. This should engage the motor and you should hear a whirling sound. If this doesn't work, try pushing the up and down button at the same time, this usually works (you have to press the up one a little harder than the down).

The system uses two small pistons that push up say 5-8 inches to push the engine up, then a third bigger piston takes over and tilts it all the way up. When you release the up button, first the smaller pistons retract (trimming it down) and then the larger piston tilts the engine down.

Fill the fluid reservoir to just overflowing with power trim and steering fluid, Quicksilver power trim and steering fluid or Dexron III automatic transmission fluid (ATF). Tilt the engine up and down a few times to bleed air out of the hydraulic system. Add more power trim fluid if needed.
